Johnny Lum Ho, I celebrate you!

The hula is an interpretive dance that tells stories of hawai'i both anciently (kahiko style) and modernly (auana style). Here, at The Merrie Monarch Festival, each year, on the Big Island, halaus (hula dance groups) from all over come to compete and show off their skills and love for the dance. It is a wonderful celebration of Hawaiian culture that speaks to the human heart! I have always enjoyed watching this event.

Johnny Lum Ho has been a long time competitor and teacher of the art. Back in the day, he used to place in the top 3 quite often and now, the judges do not grant him one award. They say that the judges are not a fan of his creativity and style as he moves further away from the traditional way and that they keep him coming only to keep the crowd pleased and the seats filled. Well, I say, Johnny Lum Ho is one of the greatest story tellers via the hula that ever lived and I celebrate and honor him and all his dancers!

**Watch his amazing choreography here and tell me this wasn't award worthy!
