...at least not without a bit of formal operational thinking (which applies if you're over the age of 12). It doesn't take much... I know, 'cause I'm not that smart. I bash simply because the saying is silly. Of course everything happens for a reason... otherwise nothing would happen.

Sorry. I can't help myself. When someone says "everything happens for a reason", whether it's to me or I am just listening in, all I hear is the literal translation and my unspoken retort is, "Really? Thanks for pointing out the obvious, genius...

You mean to say that after a cause there is an effect?
...that when I cheat on someone, that person will most likely break up with me?...that when I show up late to a job interview I will most likely not get the job because I show incompetence to my potential employer?...that when someone dies in a car accident, it's because a drunk driver hit them?"
...Oh wait, that's NOT what you mean to say!
Your explanation for logical consequences that come from poorly made decisions/behavior or even from an unfound logical answer is that there is a chosen and calculated path for us that is made by something mystic that is in control and basically we are never in control.
(Okay, my retort is never that long in my head... but I wanted to drag on because this is my blog and rambling is my specialty... so allow me to drag on a bit longer). :P
In all fairness, I can agree with the concept that there is a higher power (which I believe is a loving God) and that He has the ABILITY to control all things but, in my belief, that doesn't mean that he always does. For instance..does he help us when we ask for it? I believe, yes. All of the time? No. I don't think so. Why? Maybe we didn't really have faith that he would? Maybe for our growth? Maybe because, for the most part perhaps, he does not tamper with the laws of this world (i.e. gravity, motion, physics, attraction, nature, etc.) or the science of human biology ...(and that is totally for another post). The possible answers are endless. And I digress.
It just bugs me when people dismiss logic and reason where it fits in order to cope with unfortunate circumstances or to avoid taking accountability for something they might have had control over. Aren't we more apt to find solutions to problems when we see things as they are? Shouldn't we rely more on our ability to prevent or make things happen because we can?
Anyhow, I'm done with my rant. If you've read this far, you either loved or hated this post... or maybe were super bored. I admit, a few tactful sentences would have sufficed... but that's no fun.
Please share with me your thoughts. Maybe some insight into this UNinsightful saying that can help me be a little more sensitive and understanding when someone utters it. Or maybe another stupid saying you just love to hate? :)

I hate that phrase! I do. It started annoying me when I used to watch Charmed and they used it on every show. I can't think of another prase that I don't like to join in the fun though. Bummer.
